Land Acknowledgment

By Martha Stebbins-Aguiñiga

We at Mente Counseling & Consultation acknowledge that we are on the unceded ancestral lands of the Duwamish people past and present. A people whose heritage must be honored and brought to light. A people who live among us and are thriving, their vibrant contributions tied to the health and stewardship of the places we call home. Let us explicitly name the legacy of genocide, ethnic cleansing, stolen land, and forced removal that the colonizers inflicted upon the Indigenous, righteous owners of this land. Let us also arrive with humility and gratitude to the spaces we inhabit today as they nourish our bodies and our families, but these places are not our own. May the Duwamish people and all Indigenous people- including their territories, native languages, and traditional practices – be honored at this and all places and gatherings. May this acknowledgement stand in solidarity with indigenous people and respectfully contribute to bringing them justice.
